Chapter Nineteen

Someone lightly knocked on James’ front door. He rose from the recliner, not worried. In the days since the attack, the constant presence of Drow and bounty hunters from the agency ensured no one would get another shot at taking Thomas. The LAPD drones lingering in the area added further security. He knew the LAPD AET didn’t want to get between him and someone who messed with his family, but they might help slow down John if he showed up with a bigger army.

“It’s open,” James called.

The door opened. Zana stood on the other side, holding a small paper cup half-filled with lemonade. James couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of the armored Drow warrior with the drink. One of his neighbors felt bad for the Drow, insisting James wasn’t doing enough to keep them hydrated, especially when it’d been unusually warm the last couple of days.

James narrowed his eyes as he looked past Zana. William Altieri stood on his porch wearing an oily smile that only true criminals could achieve.

What the fuck? The only shit more annoying than random wizard kidnappers showing up is a random mobster showing up. He better not piss me off more than I am. I can punch him through the wall and have the Drow fix it.

“What the fuck are you doing at my house, Altieri?” James rumbled. “You don’t come near me or my people without my fucking permission.”

“I didn’t mean to offend you.” William sighed and adjusted his tie. “May I come in, Mr. Brownstone? I wanted to touch base with you regarding the recent unfortunate incident.”

Zana eyed the mobster with suspicion and looked at James. “Shall I kill him, Mr. Brownstone?”

William blinked, his smooth cool lost at the threat. He looked at Zana and James, panic building on his face.

“Nah. That won’t be necessary.” James grunted. “Yet. And if anyone needs to kill him, it’ll be me. Let him in and close the door behind us.”

Zana nodded, giving the mobster a cool appraisal before ushering him inside. William was visibly relieved as he surveyed the living room.

“Huh. It’s a lot more normal than I expected. But I don’t know what I was expecting. Everyone knows you don’t like to live it up, but this could be any—"

“Get to the fucking point,” James growled. “I’m not in the best mood this week, and I really, really feel like hurting people.”

“Of course,” William replied. He rubbed his top lip. “The short version is that I’ve been selected as an unofficial ambassador to you, Mr. Brownstone, on behalf of all family men and other similar organizations in greater Los Angeles. We were all disturbed to hear of the attempted kidnapping, and we have, per your previous orders, been doing our best to look into things. We don’t like the idea of outsiders coming into our city and threatening children.”

“Oh.” James sat back down. “That’s what this is about?”

“Yes.” William nodded toward the door. “I was also prepared to offer a mixed group
